Why I Love Participating In Box Sets By Cynthia Sax
I have a story (Dark Warlord) in the awesomely sexy Alien Alphas box set. I’ve participated in box sets in the past and I will participate in them in the future (if my schedule allows).
Why do I love box sets?
Writers don’t often get the chance to work together. We work with editors and cover artists and other professionals but it is a rare situation where we can work side-by-side with another writer. A box set gives us this opportunity.
There’s often a common theme (like Alien Alphas) but we also want all of our stories to be different. This pushes us to be creative. I knew, for example, someone else would likely do an enemy to lovers storyline. Mine had to be different, a story another writer might not craft.
And it had to be good. Because I’m not only trying to wow reading buddies. I’m trying to wow writing buddies in the box set. I certainly don’t want to let the team down.
This applies to promotion as well as to the story itself. For a box set to be successful, everyone should pitch in, help spread the word. We tend to share what works. I’ve learned more about marketing from participating in box sets than from any other source.
I LOVE hearing the different opinions and insights on everything from the title to the cover to whether or not we should thank reviewers. Alien Alphas has 24 writers participating in it. That’s centuries of combined experience, all of us focused on one project.
Best of all, when I participate in a box set, I know I have release day buddies. Every success is a shared success. Every challenge is a shared challenge. We’re in this together and we all want our reading buddies to be happy.

I do love boxed sets! It gives me a chance to sample writing styles of new-to-me authors. I often find a number of ‘new’ books/series to dive into. Best thing ever!
